Yes, Avochato supports the use of short codes. Short codes are special five or six-digit numbers that can receive text messages at high volume, unlike long code numbers (traditional phone numbers) that are typically limited to sending and receiving a capped number of messages per minute.
You might've seen short codes promoted for voting on popular shows like American Idol or in special retail promotions. The advantages are that they are memorable and can send and receive at very high volumes. The disadvantage is that they are expensive, though we use a special source for shortcodes that lets us offer them at lower rates than other companies.
There are two types of short codes:
- Shared short codes share the same five or six-digit number among different companies, but each company "rents" a different keyword. When someone texts the short code with the right keyword -- e.g. "Text DREAM to 123456" -- they are matched to the right company based on the keyword.
- Dedicated short codes allow a company to have full control over a particular five or six-digit short code and use many different keywords with the same shortcode, without sharing that shortcode with any other entity.

Note that short codes are expensive compared to 10-digit numbers, and you can enable Keywords even with your longer number. So unless you expect very high volumes, we typically recommend using longform 10-digit numbers instead.
